Osteopathy (ah-stee-AH-pah-thee) is an approach to wellness that focuses on reawakening the body's inherent capacity for healing... It is a holistic medical practice pioneered in the late 1800's by a medical physician named Andrew Taylor Still.
Dr. Still (1828-1917) developed a system of health care which incorporated the use of manual medicine. It is based on the theory that the body is capable of an innate healing ability when in normal structural relationship, when it has favorable environmental conditions and when adequate nutrition is maintained.
The art and science of Osteopathy are based upon the following principles: The body is a self-regulatory and self-healing mechanism. Structure governs function. All body systems are interrelated.
Osteopathic medicine is dedicated to the treatment and healing of the entire patient. It is a science which has, for more than a century, recognized the fact that the body works as one harmonious system with an interdependent relationship between anatomy (structure), physiology (function), mind and spirit. A disturbance in one system can alter the function in any or all other systems.
It's art lies in the application of its diagnosis and treatment. The Osteopath is trained in gentle palpation in order to feel the body's "living anatomy." We learn to palpate (feel) the structural form, tissue texture changes, subtle motions and the flow of fluids within the body. The Osteopath then addresses health problems with a non-invasive medical system known as Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine or Treatment in order to restore normal function in areas impaired by trauma, chronic illness, or acute health problems. The removal of restricted areas produces free motion that enables the inherent healing systems to work unhindered.
Homeopathy is a form of natural medicine that is helpful in resolving both acute and long-term health issues. Seasonal illness, small injuries or acute conditions benefit from gentle, low-potency remedies.
Deeper-acting remedies are useful in cases of fatigue, stress, respiratory or digestive issues. Constitutional remedies act on a deeper level, in cases of chronic illness, emotional imbalance, or developmental and behavioral challenges, such as ADHD and autism. Remedies are chosen based on all aspects of a patient’s health.
In addition, Homeopathy can support children and adults as they go through major life transitions. Children become more emotionally and mentally stable, as they move thorough developmental challenges on the way to adulthood. These remedies also support adults adapting to major changes in work or family life.
Homeopathy is unique in two ways: First, a remedy is chosen that matches the whole person. Things like emotional tendencies, health history and overall energy level are taken into consideration to choose a remedy that supports the whole system, while addressing the current health complaints. Second, the remedy is given at a potency that most closely matches the patient’s current state of health.
Homeopathic remedies work to bring the patient’s system back into balance. For a remedy to be effective, it should match the immediate health complaints of the patient, as well as his or her overall constitution. This way, individual symptoms are resolved within the context of the whole person. This approach addresses individual symptoms, while strengthening the whole constitution.
Acupuncture & Chinese Medicines
Acupuncture is a practiced medical treatment that is over 5,000 years old and is used to treat a variety of illnesses and injuries.... Acupuncture is based on the theory that an energy force called Qi (pronounced Chee)
, which consists of all essential life activities, runs through the body along special pathways or channels called meridians. It further believes that if the Qi is interrupted, diminished or unbalanced, that this will manifest as disease. Treatment entails the insertion of very fine needles along the blocked meridian channels in order to facilitate opening of the energy flow and promotion of health. Acupuncture can be augmented by the use of electrical stimulation or moxibustion (the heating of Chinese herbs). Moxibustion is often used for respiratory and arthritic conditions. Cupping is another type of treatment used by Acupuncturists to stimulate acupuncture points by applying suction to them through the creation of a vacuum in the cup. It is commonly used to treat pains, strains and injuries. Acupuncture has been used successfully in the treatment of conditions such as low back pain, sciatica, degenerative disc disease, arthritic conditions, headache, allergies and muscle spasm. It has also been effective in the treatment of nicotine and alcohol addiction. In our practice, acupuncture is used both as a primary treatment modality as well as an adjunctive treatment to Osteopathic manipulation.
Therapeutic Massage Therapy is the manual or mechanical application of pressure, tension, motion or vibration to the soft tissues of the body, including muscles, connective tissue, ligaments, tendons, joints, lymphatic vessels or organs to improve circulation and motion and to relieve pain....
Medical or therapeutic massage is the focused application of the principles of massage therapy to a specific area of the body that has experienced some form of injury or has lost proper function and mobility. It is performed either clothed or unclothed. Massage therapy is used as either a primary treatment or an adjunctive modality for a number of patients with varying conditions. Therapeutic massage is especially beneficial in the treatment of patients who have been injured in motor vehicle accidents, work-related accidents or while playing sports.
Spinal decompression is a proven non-surgical, non-invasive treatment for the relief of lower back pain and neck pain. It is an innovative approach for the relief of:
Degenerative disc disease
Posterior facet syndrome
Acute or chronic neck and back pain
IDD Therapy® was developed by a team of back specialists including neurosurgeons, orthopedists, physiatrists, osteopaths, neurologists, and physical therapists. It is a safe, painless and comfortable treatment. IDD Therapy® with the Accu-SPINA™ has been tested on thousands of patients in the last six years and found to be 86% successful in relieving lower back pain and neck pain symptoms. IDD Therapy® works by isolating a single disc level and gently separating the vertebrae surrounding an injured disc 5 to 7 millimeters creating negative pressure (or a vacuum) inside the disc. This negative pressure pulls water, oxygen, and nutrients into the vertebral disc area, thereby re-hydrating the degenerated disc. The IDD Therapy® treatment can reduce pressure on the vertebral joints, promote retraction of herniated discs, and encourage self healing and rehabilitation of damaged discs, thereby relieving the associated neck or low back pain. Twenty to thirty sessions are required to achieve optimal results. However, because the Accu-SPINA™ procedure is non-invasive, most IDD Therapy® patients can carry-on with normal daily activities.

How is FLT Different?
There are three key reasons that make FirstLine Therapy® (FLT) different than conventional lifestyle programs:
1. FLT is about more than just weight loss.
FLT can help you lose unhealthy fat while retaining healthy, lean muscle.
FLT integrates body composition testing (fat & lean tissue ratios) because being thin doesn't necessarily mean you're healthy.
An imbalance in body composition (gaining too much fat or losing too much muscle) can lead to serious health problems such as high blood pressure, altered cholesterol levels, etc.
Loss of muscle results in loss of ability to burn calories, which makes it much more difficult to maintain weight loss over time.
FLT focuses on lifestyle factors that are the underlying cause of many health problems.
2. The FLT eating plan is different.
Most diets focus on NOT eating - not eating fat, not eating carbs, or just plain not eating much of anything. With most diets, success is based primarily on will power.
The FLT eating plan emphasizes the need to eat, and to eat frequently.
The focus is on eating THE RIGHT KIND OF FOODS - the right kind of fat, the right kind of carbohydrates, and the right kind of protein - all in the right portion size.
FLT incorporates a low-glycemic-index eating plan based on the latest scientific research that will help you maintain stable blood sugar and energy levels.
According to recent studies, low-glycemic diets are more effective than low-fat diets in treating obesity, insulin resistance, high cholesterol, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.
People report less hunger and more energy, making it much easier to stick with the program.
3. FLT incorporates medical foods and dietary supplements.
Using appropriate medical foods and dietary supplements as part of this program can improve the effectiveness of the program for you and help you achieve your health goals.
Medical foods are designed to address the unique nutritional needs of patients with specific health concerns.
Dietary supplements provide targeted nutritional support for specific functions, such as healthy blood cholesterol or blood sugar levels, joint function and mobility, or healthy hormone metabolism.
FLT has been demonstrated to be effective in controlled clinical trials, while most other diets have not.
Personalizing Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes We will personalize your FirstLine Therapy® program based on your individual health concerns.
